This year the Quantum Future Academy is getting Pan-European! For the first time, students from 30 countries will be attending the one-week-academy which will take place in Berlin, November 1-7, 2020.

COVID-19 Update

We are closely monitoring the situation concerning the COVID-19 pandemic. By now, we are confident that the academy can take place as an on-site event in Berlin as planned. We will of course make sure to follow all safety rules such as distance and hygiene requirements. Together with our European partners, we also keep a close look on all travel regulations. We will inform all applicants/participants as early as possible about any changes concerning the academy.

Today’s insights for tomorrow’s experts

Challenges in quantum technologies are not limited to the field of physics: transferring basic principles of quantum physics into actual technical applications still requires enormous effort in development, e. g. in the fields of engineering sciences or information technologies. Those who want to make these new technologies profitable must create business models and find markets as well. To match those needs and to provide an exclusive overview on state-of-the-art research and development in quantum technologies, Quantum Future Academy 2020 will be a full week program containing:

  • Excursions to leading companies and institutes
  • Lectures by experts in the field of quantum technologies
  • An exclusive insight into the current state of research and development
  • Talks and networking with entrepreneurs, start-ups and founders
  • Interactive workshops
  • Discussions and networking with political representatives
  • Social program with evening events

A European matter

After two exciting academy weeks in Germany (2018) as well as in Germany and France (2019), we take the next step to appreciate quantum technologies as what they are: A European matter. Therefore, in 2020, partner institutions in 30 countries  are participating. Each of them will select two students from their country who then receive a ticket to attend the final Academy week in Berlin.

What you need to know

Who is hosting?

The Academy will take place within the framework of Germany‘s EU Council Presidency 2020. It is hosted by the German Federal Ministry of Education and Research (BMBF) in cooperation with Ferdinand-Braun-Institut, Leibniz-Institut für Höchstfrequenztechnik (FBH) and Humboldt- Universität zu Berlin. The initiative is supported by the European Quantum Flagship Initiative of the European Commission and various institutions of the participating states.

Who can participate?

Students of engineering or natural sciences from universities of the participating countries in bachelor and master programs with basic knowledge in quantum mechanics.
Participation in the academy is free of charge. Meals and housing will be provided. Travel expenses to and from Berlin will be reimbursed in coordination with the organizers. The event language is English.

How to apply?

The selection process will be organized by each partner individually, so application details will differ. To find out about the process in your country, please contact the respective institution in charge, which you will find on this list.  Students from Germany can apply online through this website.

Application for students from Germany

Application period has expired.

For students currently studying engineering or natural sciences at a German University, the following application process occurs. Applying students should be within a further state of a bachelor program (5th semester onward) or in a master program and have basic knowledge in quantum mechanics.

  • Stage 1: Application was possible until 15 July 2020. Uploading a short letter of motivation, a recent CV, and a recent transcript of records was mandatory.
  • Stage 2: Selected applicants will be invited to explain their motivation in a short pitch during an exclusive workshop. Further information on that will be sent to the candidates by email. The best applicants will receive a ticket to attend the academy in Berlin!
